WASHINGTON – National Council of Jewish Women CEO Sheila Katz released the following statement in response to the incoming Biden administration’s announcement of a new White House Council on Gender Policy:

“This announcement comes after months of conversation, planning, advice, and counsel from a number of feminist organizations representing a diverse range of voices, including National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). We’re thrilled that the incoming administration already understands that thinking about women when designing policy isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Centering women and the needs of families leads to better outcomes for everybody.

“The newly formed Council on Gender Policy will promote intersectionality and center the needs of women and girls from all backgrounds, particularly Black, Indigenous, LGTBQ+, immigrants, and those with disabilities in federal policy — groups that have historically been marginalized and excluded from decision making. As the Council focuses on pursuing gender equity and equality in the United States and around the globe, National Council of Jewish Women advocates will continue to lift up and support the most vulnerable women, children, and families and advocate for policies that help make this a reality alongside the Council and partner organizations.

“NCJW is proud to be part of this effort and we look forward to working closely with co-chairs Jennifer Klein, Chief Strategy and Policy Officer of Time’s Up, and Julissa Reynoso, Dr. Jill Biden’s Chief of Staff, to promote gender equity and equality and make our institutions and communities safer places for all. Both Klein and Reynoso have been champions for gender justice throughout their careers; Klein served as a Deputy and Senior Advisor in the Office of Global Women’s Issues within the Office of the Secretary at the U.S. Department of State focusing on the advancement of women and girls and Reynoso served as U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere in the U.S. Department of State.”
