National Council of Jewish Women Thrilled Senate Confirmed Kristen Clarke
WASHINGTON – Upon Senate confirmation of Kristen Clarke to serve as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice, NCJW CEO Sheila Katz released the following statement:
“National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) could not be more pleased to see Kristen Clarke confirmed by the Senate today to lead the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice. Clarke has devoted her life to the pursuit of equal justice for all — the exact mission of the Civil Rights Division. Under her leadership, we know the Division will be in good hands as it upholds the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans, particularly some of the most vulnerable members of our society who are at the core of our mission. Our community and so many others can rest easier knowing Clarke will be at the helm of efforts to ensure our rights, including prohibiting discrimination; enforcing federal hate crimes law; securing voting rights; and advancing racial, gender, disability, ethnic, religious, immigrant, and LGBTQ justice.
“In addition to being joyous, today’s vote is truly historic — since the Division was created 64 years ago, Clarke is the first woman and the first Black woman confirmed to this critical post. On the one-year anniversary of the killing of George Floyd, Kristen Clarke is exactly who we need right now guiding the Civil Rights Division — promoting justice and improving lives — as we reckon with our country’s past and journey towards equality.”
