February 5, 2021, Washington, DC-National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) celebrated President Biden’s efforts to begin restoring the nation’s refugee resettlement program. NCJW Chief Policy Officer Jody Rabhan released the following policy statement:
“National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is heartened to see President Biden once again recognize resettling refugees as a core value of our nation. As an organization that supports women, children, and families, we appreciate the administration’s commitment to “enhance access to the refugee program for people who are more vulnerable to persecution, including women, children, and other individuals who are at risk of persecution related to their gender, gender expression, or sexual orientation.”
“The Trump administration worked relentlessly to gut our country’s refugee resettlement program, with unfortunate success. This fiscal year the government capped resettlement at only 15,000, the lowest number in modern history, and worse yet, fewer than 1,500 refugees have actually been resettled so far. President Biden’s commitment to increase the resettlement cap before the end of the year is a welcome step to addressing the world’s refugee crisis and fulfilling our international obligations.
“NCJW will hold the administration accountable to the goals set out in yesterday’s executive order to ensure our nation once again becomes a beacon of hope to those seeking safety, security, and better lives for themselves and their families.”
