WASHINGTON — Today, the Supreme Court ruled in California v. Texas, upholding the Affordable Care Act and ensuring continued health care coverage for millions of Americans. National Council of Jewish Women CEO Sheila Katz issued the following statement applauding the decision:
“Today’s ruling to preserve the Affordable Care Act is a huge victory for all Americans, especially the 31 million people, including women, children and other marginalized people, who were in immediate danger of losing their health care in the midst of an ongoing deadly pandemic. We applaud the Supreme Court for once again affirming the legality of the Affordable Care Act by throwing out this lawsuit and ensuring this crucial lifeline continues.
“For more than a decade, the Affordable Care Act has improved the lives of women, children and families across the country. With its creation, 9.5 million uninsured women gained affordable, comprehensive health care coverage. The Supreme Court decision today ensures that they can keep that coverage and that women will not be charged extra for the same plan as men because of gender. What’s more, individuals will not be denied insurance because of a previous pregnancy or because they are a survivor of domestic violence.
“The pandemic has only underscored the critical need for expanded access to affordable and quality health care and the deep inequities that continue to permeate our country. The Affordable Care Act has been an essential resource for millions of people, including many people of color, throughout the COVID-19 crisis, allowing them to maintain health insurance either through the marketplaces or expanded Medicaid.
“Now is the time to focus on building on the Affordable Care Act’s successes and making improvements that will ensure affordability and accessibility of health care services and coverage. As Jews, the value of pikuach nefesh demands that we prioritize the preservation of health and life, which is impossible without access to quality, comprehensive health care. National Council of Jewish Women will continue to fight for a health care system that serves us all.”
